Phil, the eldest Shulman brother, was in the band for its first four albums: Gentle Giant, Acquiring The Taste, Three Friends, and Octopus. He was one of the primary composers, and fans say that his influence gave an introspective feeling to the music. Phil was also an accomplished multi-instrumentalist and sang lead vocals.
