Rare and Unreleased Tracks
Gentle Giant recorded several pieces that were not released on the
original 12 albums.
In recent years, some of these pieces have resurfaced and have been
released; others are still a mystery. Here are all the tracks I know about.
Unreleased Tracks
These tracks have never been released. A good quality recording would be
a major discovery!
Evil Woman
According to
Jack Skelly,
this song was "played live in the early days" of Gentle Giant. No
known recording exists, but "a 12-string guitar riff from that song was
recycled into the song
Betcha
Thought We Couldn't Do It
many years later."
Peel Off the Paint
Written before Gentle
Giant's first album.
The lyrics are identical to
Peel The Paint from
Three Friends, but the music is completely different.
Never released.
A poor-quality live recording has reportedly circulated among fans.
Time in Your Face
This song might not exist. The title was circulated as part of a
rumor, saying that it would appear as a bonus track on a future
remaster of
In A Glass House. However, Ray Shulman has no recollection of
any GG track with this name.
Rare Tracks
These tracks were lost and then found many years later.
Written before Gentle
Giant's first album.
It is a ballad influenced by 1960's soul.
The original tape has been found and appears on
Under Construction.
A rocking blues song written before
Gentle Giant's first album. It
was long forgotten -- even more forgotten than the other tracks on
this page.
Appears on
Under Construction.
Written before Gentle Giant's
first album.
For a long time, the only known recording was a poor-quality
cassette circulated among fans, recorded at one of Gentle Giant's
first gigs. Then
a studio recording was located in the archives of the
BBC, and it was released in 1996 on
Out Of The Woods.
Recorded
during the Civilian period.
It first was released as
a bonus track on the
Civilian CD from Terrapin Records,
but it was taken from a poor-quality cassette recording.
The original tape, discovered in January 1997, appears
on the later CD release from One Way Records.
Written before Gentle
Giant's first album.
The original tape was found and appears on
Under Construction.
Recorded around the time of
the album of the same name. It appears as a bonus track
on the CD releases of
The Power And The Glory from DRT, Terrapin Records, and
One Way Records. (It does not appear on the Capitol CD release.)
The track previously appeared on the vinyl compilation album
Giant Steps, and a live-in-the-studio
version appears on the bootleg
Playing The Foole - A Stake
Through The Heart.
Written before Gentle
Giant's first album.
This song has a rather "1960's hippy" feel but you can also
hear the building blocks of Gentle Giant's style.
The original tape has been found and appears on
Under Construction.
Written by John Weathers during the
Civilian era.
The original tape has been found and
