In February 1995, I asked the members of the Internet mailing list On-Reflection to vote on their favorite Gentle Giant albums. 69 people voted, and here are the results.

Favorite Gentle Giant Albums

Each respondent voted for his/her three favorite Gentle Giant albums, in no particular order. The results are:

RANK	ALBUM				VOTES
================================================
1.	Octopus				37
2.	Free Hand			36 *Tie*
	The Power And The Glory 36 *Tie*
4.	In A Glass House		27
5.	Acquiring The Taste		18
6.	Playing The Fool		17
7.	Three Friends			15
8.	Interview			10
9.	The Missing Piece		 5
10.	Gentle Giant			 3
11.	Giant For A Day			 1

No votes for "favorite": Civilian and In Concert.

Based on these results, more than half of the On-Reflection subscribers consider Octopus, The Power and the Glory, and/or Free Hand to be Gentle Giant's best albums.

Remember that this was a vote for favorite albums, not just good albums. Most of the non-winning albums are still highly rated by many fans.

Recommended For New Listeners

Next, they voted for one Gentle Giant album that would be the best introduction for a new listener. The results are:

RANK	ALBUM				VOTES
================================================
1.	Free Hand			20
2.	Octopus				19
3.	Playing The Fool		17
4.	In A Glass House		 5
5.	Acquiring The Taste		 4
6.	Three Friends			 2
7.	Gentle Giant			 1 *Tie*
	The Power And The Glory 1 *Tie*

The most interesting result here, I think, is that The Power And The Glory was ranked at the top of the "favorite" category, but hardly mentioned in the "recommended to a new listener" category. It seems that people think The Power And The Glory is an album that you have to hear a lot before you can appreciate, whereas Free Hand and Octopus are more immediately likable.

Thanks to everyone who voted!
